It was a Cool November evening and the Cannock firemen were shaking in there clumpy, large, steel toe cap boots as they looked out over their visitors car park to see Bracken, butterfly, pumpkin and squirrel waiting to be let in, I'm not sure if it was just my imagination, but I thought there was a strange glint in each of their eye's. The Fireman in charge of our visit was clearly a very good judge of character as no sooner had we gained entrance to his station he put one leader in charge of the station keys (obviously noting the leader's finer qualities, like bravery, charm and strength, in character, body and spirit. Clearly this everyday hero felt an affinity to our leader).
Gareth, the Fire man
All the Beavers were gathered into a classroom and split into two groups, one group went out to a tour of one of the stations fire tenders whilst the other group sat and listened to a talk from Gareth, who told us about the principles of fire safety and answered every question we could 'Fire' at him. :D . At one point all adults were amazed to hear one of our Beavers recite the helpline number to call to have a free fire safety check in your home, for those few moments we had a childhood genius in our midst, until he pointed out it was on a poster at the back of the room. He shouldn't have said anything and left us marvelling.
One poor Leader was physically forced into trying on the fire men's safety gear, they are clearly, all secret dwarfs in this particular fire station. After this cruel act it was time for the groups to swap around.
We made our way out to the practice yard via the vehicle bay and saw the various units based at Cannock.

After our brief tour of the vehicle bay, we moved out to the practice yard where there was a fire engine all open and running, we were given a tour and told what all the various tools were. |
My particular favourite tool on the whole fire engine was the most essential. It was the kettle! these fire men aren't daft! After the tour came play time.
All in all, when all was said and done, I believe everyone had an enjoyable and informative night, and as a thank you we left the fire men a little gift, which hopefully will be enjoyed and appreciated. A huge thanks to all the guys on duty at the station for making us so welcome. If you would like a home fire safety visit please click below to be forwarded to our useful links page.
